Who was the well-respected director of the "Deer Hunter?" Whose next picture bombed: "Heaven's Gate." Disjointed and edited from 4 hours to 2 hours. I know I came out of the theatre wondering what in the hell the movie was about. Cimino's "Deer Hunter" was one of the most intense movies this reviewer has ever seen. The Russian Roulette scenes put the "i" in intense. And, of course, Christopher Walken had an oof-beat role, who played R.R. because he was strung out on drugs and had a death wish. "Heaven's Gate had a budget of around 40 million but brought in a measly pittance of around 2 million. It was awful. Cimino attempted to recreate the Wild West with authentic costumes for the period, etc. Needless to say, it was the death knell for the young director. On top of the heap one day, down in the dumps the next, v.c.
