"Dear Diary" and "Thanks Rock"

Dear Diary, It's two days before Thanksgiving. And to think I haven't had a T.G. off in 30 years. Am I dreaming or what? Rockhead wrote the Pond today and said "welcome to the living." Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. And a different world from what I knew at the PIC. Falcons/Lions and probably Dallas vs. somebody. The Bill and Jerry show.

And Dear Diary, I just wrote a response to Chef Etouffee on the old message board. Like in the olden days.

Today on the job it was nothing like yesterday. Busy as hades Monday with flight delays, while today things were generally normal. Now tomorrow will be a different story. Just like PIC but no phones ringing, running like a madman across the water [ had to get in a plug for Elton John ] and arriving home at 1 a.m. or later and returning at 7 a.m. Thanksgiving morning to do it all over again.

Well, Dear Diary, it's late and time for beddy-bye. See ya tomorrow night. v.c.

P.S. AOL asked its subscribers to vote for the best album cover of all time. Of course, the winner is Sgt. Pepper by you-know-who. And it is no secret who I voted for. Or is it: it is no secret for whom I voted, eh? Here are the results of the poll:

Which of these album covers would you consider the greatest ever?

38% The Beatles, 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'
15% Nirvana, 'Nevermind'
12% Led Zeppelin, 'Led Zeppelin'
7% Fleetwood Mac, 'Rumors'
5% Notorious B.I.G., 'Ready to Die'
5% Johnny Cash, 'At Folsom Prison'
5% Green Day, 'Dookie'
5% Madonna, 'Like a Virgin'
3% Pearl Jam, 'Ten'
2% Bob Dylan, 'Highway 61 revisited'
2% Beastie Boys, 'Licensed to Ill'

No surprise here. As always, the Fab 4 are numero uno. Case closed.

"Thanksgiving Week In The Food Biz" and "Dear Diary" and "A New Installment of 'Dear Cat'"

Dear Diary, Today was 11-21-05; now it is 11-22-05, 01:23. I am writing you, dear diary, because this is my new shtick; it just came to me as I started to hit da keys. Yours truly began a new rendition of "Dear Cat" the other night [ draft ]and will tuck it onto the end of this one, cos today/tomorrow is Tuesday, dear diary, and endless rigors await me.

At least, I'm not answering the phones-notice plural-and taking orders like I did for 30 years. And running myself ragged. Making sure the dressing was cooking at the right temp in the bain marie [ bambareen ]; making sure the product was in the building i.e. cooked turkeys, universal dressing-it's outta this world- frozen cranberry sauce, giblet gravy; making sure the carrot souffle-which I introduced to the world-is being made correctly at 39 lbs. a shot. [ big mixing bowl ] And making sure the pre-fab carrot souffle is snuggled together in the freezer with the beef livers, red velvet cake layers, breaded okra, frozen rolls that haven't been proofed, apple pies that only require butter and a hot oven, quarts of sweet potato pie filling, pre-fab pie shells, etc. etc. etc. etc.

And coordinating the whole affair, by having Thanksgiving runners who bring the food to the guests. Answering queries from the guests. Breaking up fights between guests and managers. A gay manager and a guest "got into it" one holiday season is one for the memoirs. And his taking home a ham dinner and extra sides and charging himself $7.00 and change is another-where do they find these people? [ apologies to Jerry Springer ] While stationed on the serving line, his favorite shtick was saying to the guests: "How can I satisfy your cravings, today?" Well, it does beat: "Serve You!"

Needless to say I won't miss it. And this T.G. will be my first one off in 30 years. Time flies when yer havin' fun. I won't know how to act, and I won't be exhausted and arriving late for my family dinner with Kitty, Charlie, Catlain, Babe, and Francois, [ the latter two=Kitty's mother and brother ] cos I'll be on the sofa watching football games on the boob tube and napping.

Well, dear diary, it's time to say farewell and adieu for another night pre T.G. v.c.

And here's another installment of "Dear Cat"

Submitted for yer approval and perusal:

"Advice to the Lovelorn" returns tonite with another installment of "Dear Cat."

Dear Cat: I went to Rowdy High with you and recall that you were a BMOC. [ Big Man On Campus ] I lost touch with you until we met at a Rowdy High Reunion this year. And have been reading Golden Pond since you turned me on to it. I enjoy my daily dose of the catfish and believe one day you will hit the big time. My dilemma: I once had a bushy bushy blonde hairdo, long sideboards, pep in my step, and a large, er, boner, but lately, I've noticed my hair is thinning, sideboards are no longer cool, largesse is my middle name, and I have had to resort to modern medicine to achieve an erection. Plus, I have to take anti-cholesterol and blood pressure meds, and now have diabetes. My question: Ain't life a bitch? and is there any hope for me? Signed: "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and ex Rowdy High Alum!"

Dear Yellow [ just another ] Brick Road: Yes, I was quite a hunk back in the day. And thanks for reading "The Pond!" Although I have none of the symptoms you so eloquently described, you must quit your whining and forget the past, "moving forward." Join your local AARP and whine and bitch to your peer group that Bush and the Republicans are trying to take away your social security. Quit going to quacks and try herbs or join Ron L. Hubbard's "Scientology" network. Stop eating Big Macs and Whoppers! And here's suggesting you join a focus group to discuss your sexual malaise. After rethinking your situation, why don't you just "fuking give up?"

*************If the above "Dear Cat" suggests someone you may know, the author claims no responsibility; it is coincidental, at best.

"Achy Brachy Heart" or "Music To Post By"

Your irreverent host wrote this foray back in 2002. Our company was in its "moving forward" mode, and a lot of us charges were a bit uncomfortable with our new direction. And the newly arranged Brass was restructuring our pay scale, so everyone was a bit nervous. What followed from the fish was my post entitled "Achy Brachy Heart." My old post is included here because in the dark pre-historic days of 2002, I couldn't add a song to me post and now it's possible so....

Achy Brachy Heart

"Don't Break My Heart, my achy brachy heart.
I just don't think it'd understand.
Cos if you break my heart, my achy brachy heart.
It might blow up and kill this man. Woo."

"O.k., Catfish, this time with feeling," came the voice from the producer, Phil Spectre. [ Special Executive For Counterintelligence Terrorism Revenge and Extortion ] Legendary hit machine maker of the 60's.

"You're just going through the motions. Get ready, fellas. Take 12."

The fellas were the Piccadilly Managers. They were recording "P.M. Sing the Hits." Volume 12 for K TEL. Catfish was singing lead on the mega-hit from the 90's.

The music fades in. Catfish is ready to sing when: "Hold it. Hold it. I can't sing this crap. Country music. Ibbq4u2 tried to reinvent my personna. Thanks, but I gotta be me."

"Settle down, Cat. What do you want to sing?" asks Spectre.

"I was saving this song for the mystery shopper, but I want to dedicate it, instead, to G.O.D. I recorded the music last week. All it needs is my voice." returns the Catfish.

"'Every Breath You Take,' the old Police song. Interesting. Let's give it a whirl." The Spectre was impressed. This could have promise.

Every breath I take
Every move I make.
Every bond I break
Every step I take
You'll be watching me.

They wrapped up the song in one take. Ibbq4u2 nodded his approval. Spectre applauded. "You're on a roll, Cat. Anymore?"

"Yeah, I'd like to do Rod Stewart's 'Reason To Believe.'"

"Can we do it in one take? K TEL wants the recording by February 1st. There's mixing, remixing, you guys know how it works," remarks Spectre.

"We can do this," say the managers in unison. "But we've got more songs to sing. We've got so much material, it's got to be a double album, er, c.d.

We want to do Springsteen's 'Dancing in the Dark.' Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty's 'Stop Dragging My Heart Around.'"

Catfish interrupts. "Don't forget ZZ Top's 'Jesus Just Left Chicago. And he's bound for Baton Rouge.'"

"That was New Orleans, Cat," corrects hootsbuddie.

"Whatever. Baton Rouge is more topical. Let's change the words. Think we'll get sued? Like George Harrison did for his 'My Sweet Lord' supposed ripoff. Of the Chiffon's 'He's So Fine.'"

Demosthenescard chimes in. He wants to add "Hurts So Good," a John Cougar Mellencamp ditty, to the playlist.

The mood was festive. The managers were relating. Spectre was impressed, not an easy accomplishment for the legendary "Wall of Sound" producer.

They finished the cuts on January 10th. The release date: February 1st. The managers were nervous. What was to become of them if Volume 12 was a flop. This was their last chance at redemption. Volume 11 had been a disappointment.

The last cuts were Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin" ( We're Not In Love Anymore ), and Quarterflash's "Harden My Heart." Those two songs were the toughest but their best.

"Boys, you done good," says Phil Spectre. "Let's have a listen." He drops the needle, er, turns on the playback.

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
They'll be watching you.

Slim Stealson, a genius who was ahead of his time, retired this month. The food biz owes him a debt of gratitude. Two men, Red and yours truly, searched their feelings and paid homage to one of the giants in the industry. Gone but not forgotten, one Slim Stealson:

When we read the sad news about 'ol Slim, the whole clan was distraught. It caught us completely off-guard. Kitty suggested we have a moment of silence to honour Slim's legacy. Charlie Jr. quit viewing rerun episodes of "King of the Hill for at least 60 minutes" and Katlain postponed a trip to the mall.

She did call her fellow teens to give them the low down.

"Slim Stealson quit dad's old company," teary-eyed Katlain said to one of her new friends.

"Who's Slim Stealson." Gretchan wanted to know.

"Why he's one of the greatest food biz Managers in the free world?"

"Wow!"

"And he knew how to make money. One of his more brilliant ploys was hiding the butter pack from the guests, so's they'd use oleo cups."

"Yew. What's an oleo cup?"

"It just happens to be one of the most essential ingredients to any Pic recipe."

The conversation lasted hours, and Gretchan regretted never seeing the "Man" in action. But she was duly impressed. And held her own moment of silence, lighting incense and watching it waft gingerly throughout her mucous membranes.

Ennyhoo, thanks for the memories, Slim. You took South Florida and built it into an empire.

To you, Azz, and Mr. Edrobal. We'll never see a triumvirate like you guys agin.

Red, I will drown my sorrows at ye local bar On Golden Pond. Via a "white russian" or a "mile high mary."

Bon voyage, v.c.

P.S. RSVP! You have a one way ticket on the nite train.

"George W. and Al Franken"

 Posted by Picasa

"Another 'I Report-You Decide'" or "George W. Gets Whupped" or "Shirley, You Jest!"

Another e mail from my sister, Olga. Once again, this was forwarded to her. And she forwarded it to me. This is a hoot. Are people this naive? Or what? I almost forgot. This is a "I Report-You Decide" so my personal opinions should not bias the reader.

The forward is from the e mailer who sent it to sis:

I didn't happen to catch this particular part of Al's show [ Al Franken ] on Friday,
apparently. But I've heard other stories that Shrub is just barely keeping
his act together, which is why he has all the attendees screened at his
"town hall meetings" and why he's kept well out of sight of protesters.

I do think it's very clear that he's the worst president this nation has had
in my lifetime, and probably ever.

It's (way past!) time for him to leave.

And here's the forwarded e mail; it concerns censorship of the Franken show, and how George W. is losing it. Plus, he receives a whupping from a female, a black belt karate type:

Bush is loosing his grip on reality! He slapped one of his staff today!

President George Bush is not emotionally or psychologically fit to run this
country!

The Al Franken Show is 'blocked off the air' today!

This morning during the Al Franken Show they also had a little experience
and told a 'news breaking story' that has very big ramifications! Listen up!
They held another one of their 'blue hours' where they turned off the
recording equipment because the material they were revealing was so
sensitive! After this story was told 'on the air' The Al Franken show was
literally 'blanked off the air' for over an hour by The Dark Agenda for
revealing this story! Is this Nazi Germany?

Here's the story they told this morning as I remember it!

Apparently early this morning in The White House during some kind of 'Ethics
Meeting' held between Bush and his staff, a female intern asked President
Bush a question that made him so mad, he turned around slapped her very hard
across the face! This female intern happened to be trained as a Black Belt
in 'The Martial Arts' and she was totally insulted at being slapped.
Apparently her 'martial training' instantly took effect and she grabbed
George by the arm and got him into a position where she held him in a pose
with his arm twisted behind his back. She told him---"You had better
apologize to me and to all your staff RIGHTY NOW -or- I AM GOING TO BREAK
YOUR ARM!"

The story goes that the next instant George Bush then suddenly fell to the
ground and started kicking and screaming and crying like a baby, literally
having a tantrum in front of everyone! And, he kept muttering over and over
again---"They are going to Kill Me! They are going to Kill Me! They are
going to Kill Me!"

The next instant The Secret Service showed up and a Psychologist came
scurrying into the room with a syringe full of medication and he was sedated
and literally carried out of the room! It is obvious they are trying to keep
this story from the press and folks, all I can say is: 'the gig is up'! We
are witnessing the last hours of this administration and they are literally
'pulling at straws' to try and keep it all together!

[snip]

"I report-you decide!" But if you ask me, this is the most non-sensical horse bleep I've read in a long time. The Secret Service showing up to rescue George W. Yea, right. The Franken staff turning off the recorder. Puh-leeze!

"Thanksgiving Movies" Now Showing

I used to write these forays into the infantile on the PIC Message Board. It was my training ground, even tho the fish has always liked to write and create.

Most of the movies tonite have a food-service theme, [ duh, really ] and some references may be foreign to the viewer. Oh, well. You can't win 'em all.

Here's "Thanksgiving Movies" Now Showing presented here On Golden Pond. And, of course, it is submitted for your approval and perusal:

1) "The Squid and the Whale": New CEO of a cafeteria chain decides to shake-up the menu by introducing sushi. Zany hijinks ensue as rowdy guests balk at the new fare. "We want the old favorites," says the President of the AARP Snobird Organization. Another classic line from the film: "Don't count the black eyed peas," muttered by one of the independent factions.

2) "Derailed" : Spellbinding! Exhilirating! Riveting! Another Big Business moviedom romp, based loosely on "Brave New World, " "The Jungle," and "Animal Farm." Mayhem and chaos on "The runaway nite train. Ready to crash and burn. It never learns" is the movie's hook and tag line.

3) "Prime" : A documentary from the Dilly Brothers as they romp across 13 states in search of the perfect dining experience. Billy Dilly gets pissed at one stop where most of the food items are empty, cold, and tasteless. "At least one of the servers smiled," Will Dilly remarks to his brother is a memorable line that will stay with you forever.

4) "Get Rich or Die Trying:" "At the end of the day what will you hang onto?" Leroy "50 Cent" Piece decides to hang it up after 40 plus years of cooking fried chicken. After many foiled attempts at franchising his popular fowl cuisine, "50 Cent" Leroy becomes a serial killer. "A psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seats," says "The New York Times." Cameo by Miss Bessie, who is Leroy's first victim. "I always hated that bitch," '50 Cent' mutters rhetorically in one of the more distressing scenes.

5) "Chicken Little:" "Hilarious" says Bob Wire of People Magazine. Reviewer Cal Esthenics of "The Washington Post" reports, "I 'bout fell out of my seat when the guest told the manager, " you oughta be ashamed of taking them baby chicks away from their mother."

6) "I Walk The Line:" A new recruit in the wonderful world of the food biz walks up and down the serving line. Day in and day out. He gets weary of saying, "Change this pan. How long on fried chicken? Whaddaya mean you've got to go home?" so he decides to write a song. Instant suckcess follows, and he becomes a country-western legend. His name: Johnny Cash! "Spellbinding" claims Siskel/Ebert.

7) "Harry Potter and The Giblet of Fire:" Based loosely on "Animal House," this zany comedy takes place on the campus of "Truck U.," during the Thanksgiving holidays. When a blizzard engulfs the campus and the students aren't allowed to leave, Harry conjures up a 'giblet of fire' and saves the day by making cornbread dressing in bain maries.

8)"Jarhead:" A marine heads to Northern California to debunk the theory that "rice au roni" is actually "the San Francisco Treat."

9) "The Legend of Azzwhole:" The swashbuckling hero returns after a rousing suckcess in the fast food and cafeteria bizness. "All hail, Caesar" is a recurring line spoken by the plebians.

10) "Capote:" This foray into the infantile is capote. Fini.' You may now disembark the night train....
